You're Not Ready
“You’re not ready.”
A candidate of mine continued to hear this from his manager about being promoted into a manager role. He was with the company for over 3 years and did everything they asked of him. He continued to ask questions about what he could do to be promoted. He took leadership courses, went above and beyond, etc.
“You’re not ready.”
I felt his pain. I heard this several times early in my recruiting career. I tried everything. I wasn’t as polished.
So, we worked together to come up with a plan. We made adjustments to his resume. We collaborated on target companies he was interested in. I introduced him to people who were in the role he was striving for.
Result?
He’s now with a company where he is much happier. The new company now has him in a leadership program. He is getting 1:1 mentorship from his boss. He has management responsibilities in his current role. He’s now confident he will soon get the manager role he’s been working towards. Most importantly, the company values him.
Sometimes we just need a change of scenery. We need to be surrounded by the right people to guide us. We need the right culture.
Sometimes we need someone who will be a career advocate for us. Sometimes we need a Recruiter.
If you are struggling to find a new opportunity, stay positive. Surround yourself with the right people.
